My mom hasn't had Dedicated snow tires for 40 years. Because $500 for a set of 4 all seasons is expensive enough. Apparently she has never bought 255's. She also thinks studded tires are illegal, I have no idea where she got that idea.

Studded tires are illegal in lots of places, although I assume that's not the case in the mountains.

Studded tires are illegal (sort of) in Japan and parts of Canada (Southern Ontario) outright, and illegal in others during parts of the year -according to Wikipedia. I think some US states limit them as well.

Their not illegal here. I know they used to be for a very short period of time, but not for years

Edit: yup totally legal. Source

Still, it's reasonable to assume your mom encountered that somewhere, so it's not a total tuckus-pull.

I'm a third generation colorado native, she never lived anywhere but here. I have no Idea where she got her information

I had snow tires once, didn't feel like it made much difference at all. I just run all-seasons.

I noticed today that the Odyssey slides very easily and it doesnt hook very well. I think Winters would help a bit

Not to sound like an ass, but try slowing down more.

I never went over 30mph today. I know the conditions were bad, but it should not have been sliding that much. I actually hit a curb going 3mph today, the alignment is a little off.

Do like me and live in the south. No real concern for snow. When it does everything shuts down anyway so no need to go anywhere. Plus, when it does happen we usually go through a thaw/re freeze cycle that turns it all to ice and unless you do have studded tires you won't be going anywhere.

It is getting close, but the tires are likely your main culprit.

I think my parents cheap out on them. I cant understand how people can budget the purchase of the only contact between you and the road

Sometimes you gotta save where you can man.

But dedicated summers and winters end up costing the same as all seasons in the long run

Do you have the space available to store extra sets of wheel/tires?

Oh ya, Weve got a 2 car garage and a covered patio in the back yard

Depends the snow tires, most of them make a world of difference. Enough for a 360 Modena to hit 158 in snow on the highway apparently..
